Facebook Messages: the future of communication online?

November 17, 2010

Facebook has launched “seamless messaging” according to founder Mark Zuckerber

The site’s new ‘Facebook Messages‘ will allow users to combine their communications across text messages, instant messages, emails and messages sent on Facebook.

How will this affect the way people interact and communicate with each other online?

It is  an innovation that seems inevitable: the drawing together of all our platforms, another deepening of the converging influence of the internet on our media.

But whether this development will be experienced through facebook alone we will wait and see. Will they face a fight with Google as the leading centre for our online lives? Or will these two, ultimately come closer together themselves? Will the new system destroy traitional email?

Much to discuss here.
